Resume - The Extra Edge

This article about that extra bit you can add on to your resume to give you the extra edge over others.
This isnt the typical resume building block article but this will help you establish your identity in the company based on your resume

Before reading the article I presume you have read my previous article on Resume - The Building Block Your resume should rightly say about you but it should always say what the company needs from you and what are you capable of giving the company.

A person writing that He/She has taken parts in College Dance competitions on his/her resume is totally irrelevant if they are seeking for the job profile other dance teacher. I have seen resumes where people have written College Fancy Dress winner in their achievements (I mean WAT the HECK??!?!?!).

Better you right things that focus or highlight the positives of you which will be beneficial to the company like
  • Worked on College fest organizing team.
  • Headed some XYZ event in college.
  • Was part of the technical quiz team.
  • Participated in IT competition in XYZ college.
Now these things will tell the company that you are a team player, has leadership qualities, technically strong, eager to face challenges etc etc. I could judge just that much but a true HR will judge more.
Yes you may feel “Damm, I danced so well in that competition. It was so tough and still I can’t write that in my resume?” No worries you may include it but after the achievements which the company will notice.

Write things the company wants to find in the resume. You many think that the requirements of the different companies vary. So what?!?!? I never said that you should have one resume for all the companies. Yes you need to tweak and edit your resume according to the companies. You can’t have a totally “.net” based resume in a “PHP” based company. You may be well qualified for the job but then your resume doesn’t say so.

You should mention your skills accordingly, based on the company. Now you have a doubt on how to find what the company needs. Come on guys don’t be a joke, you are learned persons. You have been using the net for Facebook and Social life of yours; it’s high time you use the net for its rightful duty “Research”. Google about the company you are sure to find something. Browse the company site, search for keywords like “goals, objectives, and career options etc”. I myself had made 4-5 copies of my resume based on the companies I sent it to.

Now this is bit of my advice to you.
Make sure your best things come first on your resumes.

Example of this

Table 1
Qualification
Year
Marks
Post Graduation
2012
72% (Distinction)
Graduation
2009
74% (Distinction)
HSC
2003
47% (Pass)
SSC
2001
74% (First Class)

And this one
Table 2
Qualification
Year
Marks
SSC
2001
74% (First Class)
HSC
2003
47% (Pass)
Graduation
2009
74% (Distinction)
Post Graduation
2012
72% (Distinction)

Now if you ask me. In first glance of the resume I would surely say that the person with Table 1 marks is more apt and qualified for the job then the person with table 2. But if you look closely both the marks are the same. Just the ordering is changed. Table 1 just puts the Best first irrespective of the chronological order but Table 2 goes with the order.

You may think “Yeh kya yeda bana raha hai”, but in reality the HR doesn’t have time to watch each and every resume closely in the first run. You need to make this tweaking in your resumes accordingly. And lemme tell you the above thing has worked in winning the HR persons mind and has put people in round 2 of the interview process.

The mail which you send should preferably mention your qualification in the subject line. Example: - “MCA graduate with Distinction.” That sounds nice isn’t it??!

I guess the 2 articles on resume writing are enough for you people. I can’t spoon feed you all, come on now your all graduates and post graduates. Go get a grip, learn for yourselves.

Do follow the blog as the next thing I am gonna write is regarding the job interview process.

Resume - The Building Blocks

Some call it resume. For some it Bio-Data, for others its CV and Nowadays its Profile.

Lets start some discussions on it. Hope at the end of the article you will learn few things

Scene 1:-
Person 1: " Hey HR mam, I have a friend for the developer position in our company. Should I refer him here".
HR: "Yes, Why not?! Tell your friend to send me his resume".

Scene 2:-HR after reviewing the resume.
HR to Assistant: - "Did you see the resume?? It’s so full of crap. How can I call this person for interview??"
Assistant: - "Yes mam. Nowadays people forget that resume is so important and all they write is crap, useless things."

These scenarios and dialogues are common thing in today’s offices. The main reason for these things is the resume we write.
It is not exactly based on the resume we write but the things we write in the resume.

The main important thing you need to keep in mind is that the resume is considered as your best representative, your best ambassador.

Your resume has to tell the company a lot about you. Think about this example.

Consider
  • Your college as a SHOP.
  • You students as the Products.
  • And your resume as your Salesperson.
  • Company is the Customer.
Now if a customer comes in to buy a product, and the salesperson is dressed funnily, has running nose, acts abnormally. The customer is discouraged from buying from that salesperson. The common notion will be “When the salesperson is so crazy, how will the product he shows?” And if all the salespersons of that shop are same alike then “What kind of shop is this?” Here you lost the customer (the company) and also the Shop (college or the institute you are in) lost its repute for that specific company.

The above example must have given you idea about what position your resume holds in building your career and for the first step in corporate world.

Below I am listing some points which are to be taken to be cared of while writing our resume.
I am also not saying that you need to follow these points accordingly coz some points may work wonders for many but may bounce back for others.
  • Keep the resume precise.
    • The resume should not be very lengthy. Yes, you can keep your feelings for the love letters you may send to your loved ones, but this is a company and the emotions are of the organization as whole.
  • Keep the resume accurate.
    • Accuracy has to be maintained in the resume what so ever. Never bluff about yourself and your achievements in the resume. The HR’s are paid to get these things corrected and there is a high chance that they gonna catch you too.
  • Proper grouping of sections.
    • You should maintain proper grouping of the sections you make within the resume. Like, academic achievements, personal details, projects worked on, and extra certificates.
    • Now the sequence of these things also matter. You can’t have academic achievements and personal details followed by projects worked on.
    • The reader should gradually move from section to section, grouping of sections is important for that reason.
  • Have achievable career goals (if mentioned any). The sentence” I would like to become a part of the integrated Company to explore my skills for the company benefit”, will put the emphasis on the reader. Also this sentence becomes common, no matter where your resume is and what you achieve in future.
  • The font size or the variations in font size should be maintained.
    • This isn’t your College project to have different varying fonts throughout the resume.
    • Use minimal font variations but at the same time use those to highlight things which you think should hold more preferences.
  • Use of Colors to be minimalistic.
    • Plz plz plz I am not going to say anything on this but for god’s sake use minimum colors on the resume. It is completely ok if you don’t use any. But use the minimum (max 2) color pallet for the resume.
I guess I am done with the basic things about resume writing. These are considered the building blocks of any resume. And are very much same in all different domains across the globe.
This article is for those who are just beginning to think about making there resume come to life.

My next article is mostly based on how we can sharpen our resume to get that extra edge over others

MCA Internship - The First Step

MCA Internship - The First Step.

I guess you people will be familiar with my previous article MCA Internship - A thought Before. Now moving forward I will just give you a glimpse of what you should be doing to get into the Internship mood and gearing to face the Big Bad world....

Generally we have the tendency to just relax a bit after our sem 5 exams, we might desperately want to enjoy the last vacation of your student life. Yes its really very tempting (LAST VACATION). But this is a crucial time for you.

My classmates and me, we did enjoy the last vacation but with a twist. I still remember the day when we had about 2 dozens of xerox copies of resumes and we were roaming aimlessly in a IT park. We were looking like a proper Sales Persons. My friends who were with me will surely agree to this. We had this thought in our mind that we needed to personally visit the company to apply. We always believed that as a fresher , we have to reach the company, the company wont try to reach us. ( until and unless you are exceptionally qualified and talented fresher with top notch college).

We visited around 15+ company on a single day. Getting all tired and down. But it surely was a learning experience for us. We got to know the gravity of the situation we gonna face immediately after the end of Vacations. That day put all of us on our toes and hence we aggressively started searching for internships.
We did enjoy our vacation but the enjoyment was of a different kind, mixed with a sense of urgency for the want of internship.

Resume or CV or Profile or Bio-data holds a very important position in find a right internship or job. A resume is basically the person without being physically present there. The resume needs to talk about you in a manner which is more suited for the applied company. So make sure you pack the right contents in your resume which rightly highlights your strengths. Now you can have many nice formats for Resumes available on the net, just try to google it and edit it accordingly.

MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE ANY SPELLING MISTAKE ON YOUR RESUME.

Keep on applying for all possible technologies. You can have your preferences but by doing so you may block opportunities for yourself. You may even have to adapt of technology and platform unheard of. Now this really sucks. Coz this is the time that you come to the conclusion and personally experience the fact that - All the things you studied in your college is hardly used in real world..... But then it does happens and it has happened with me.

Make sure you have your accounts on job portals with updated and current resume and details. Always have a nicely written mail and proper heading for the mail. Just to give you a hint, I would never mention that I am a fresher in the subject line but will surely mention about my Score Class in it. example "MCA with First Class" or "MCA with Distinction" followed by the post or profile you are applying for. This nicely written mail forms the Cover Letter for you.

Now is the waiting period for the interview call. Interviews for interns are nothing different then interviews for other professionals. Just that in these interviews we have to give the interviewee that you are a loyal person and there are high chances that you would continue working in the same company after the internship.

I am surely gonna write about my experience of giving interviews, but that gonna wait for a while.

I hope this article is of any use to you and helps you to plan your steps accordingly.

MCA Internship – A thought before

MCA Internship – A thought before

This article is basically for my juniors and for everyone who are looking for MCA (or rather any) internship.

We are here to make a career in the IT industry. Someone has rightly said that “Only thing constant in the IT world is – Change “. We live in the ever changing field so choosing a technology becomes a bit difficult.

Internship and the company greatly differ from college to college. If you are lucky enough to get into a college with nice placement activity then just forget about technology. It so happens that you hardly get a choice to choose your technology. And yes when you are getting placed in a big banner then the probability is high that you are gonna work on a certified or closed source technology like .NET.

Now let us talk about a College where they hardly provide any placement (M not taking any names hereJ). If you find yourself in such a college then I would say you need to get some thought on the technology you want to do your internship in. And this is where I think I can help you clear your thoughts or rather confuse you. I am specifically gonna talk on .NET and PHP.

MCA or MBA - The Debate

MCA Or MBA - The Debate!!!!!!

Now just looking at the topic many will be excited to read this post. People who are happy with their course will read for how  Well their stream is portrayed compare to other. People who are not Happy will read it know what more things that are bad in their field of choice. But sorry to disappoint you. This post is not for the Optimistics or Pessimistics but for Opportunistics  who exactly wants to know the reason for this debate. The reason is simple. The Opportunistic want to know what course He should pursue. I hope by the end of this write up you would have some Clarity in your thoughts or rather great confusion (Sorry for that :-) ).

Yea Being a Mumbai University MCA graduate I may save a few points for MCA but then its human tendency. But worry not most of my very good friends are from top Mumbai University MBA Colleges and hence are always giving me insights in this stream. As for knowing about MCA and life/career after that, I guess my knowledge on this subject is OK.

Computers and IT Market Trends

Birth of Information Technology and its Market Trends.

Its been a known fact that around 15-20 years back, the most common professions were Doctor, Lawyer or Engineer. Every Movie you see of those times you will be strongly reminded of this fact. Every Parent in India wanted their kid to be one of the above professional. And then with changing times the society changed and so did the professions.

Around 8-10 years back there again came a change in profession patterns and Engineering became the highest pursued career. The Engineer stream which had basic streams like Civil, Electrical, Mechanical saw flooding of other sub streams. And hence India had ushered into a the new Era of educational revolution. And Boom came Information Technology & Computers. Mumbai University Also included this things in this courses. These 2 streams reached the top positions in a short span and every Indian wanted their kid to be a computer geek. With this new changed educational reforms there was a need for new type of courses and hence the term Professional Courses was minted. BSc-IT and BSc-CS in degree courses and BE computers, IT and much more came to focus

Why and what was the need for this sudden change in Educational trends in India. Why Information Technology came to forefront and why does current changes in Market have the deepest impact on only the IT industry????? These questions always bothered me a lot. The saddest thing for me is that when I completed my BSc-IT, the Indian market was at its very low. The Economy in US was not stable and IT faced its wrath. And Now when i am about to complete my MCA the market is turning the same way. There has to be a reason for this. My analysis of situations brought me to this conclusions.

  • IT market is nothing but a Supporting tool for the real world. IT industries directly don't come in the producer consumer circle but they really influence this circle a lot. IT as it is called or Information Technology is processing of raw data into information. Raw data in forms of Surveys and processed information in form of market trend analysis. Consider the simple case of your daily grocery store. Now that store is indeed working very fine without computers. All registers and account balance is maintained by the employees. Now computer makes a grand entry and this same task of register maintenance ( now called as Database or DB) is done by computers. Bill generation, Report Generation, calculations are done by the humble computer. And hence exactly this need led to the growth of IT.
  • IT helped Industrial Revolution and vice-versa. Cross culture business, spreading of MNC's is very much dependent on IT itself. The graph of Industrial growth takes a nice steep rise coz of IT only. But mind you IT is not business, but a tool or catalyst to help other business grow
  • You may wonder then what are IT companies famous for and what is there main source of income. The main customers for this industries are the producers in the producer consumer cycle. IT industries will always remain as the support staff for this main businesses.
  • Now this IT support and Software is basically the support and maintenance for the company, whenever there is a slack in the market, the main source to stop over flow of money is to stop this support activities. In every slack period within the market, any company or for that matter you will always chuck the enhancement and will concentrate on the core activities. Example of this could be:- You giving your house a fresh coat of paint so that it looks nice. But now your low on finance and has a leakage in walls, then of-course you will divert your focus on waterproofing rather then painting the wall.
  • Also many companies built websites and software for different company and organisations and once a threshold or the market turns dry due to competition or finance then who will face the market crisis???  Yes you guessed it right , It will be IT industry for sure.

I got many more points to write on but then "Does it matter anyway???" Coz this are my thoughts and how much head I bang no one is gonna hear them. I may be totally wrong in this as I may be perceiving the situation and problems in my own world. Just wrote this to help the new entrants and new comers of the Industry are aware of this situations.

College Crap... (College ka Tapri)

Few days back I visited my degree college. I dint go there for the sake of visiting my college but for revisiting memories. I had a cup of tea near our Favorite Tapri. While having the tea, I was just wondering “Sala idhar baitke we would spend hours and hours with friends and ab toh 5 minutes bhi jyada lag raha hai”. I came to a very interesting conclusion from my thoughts. When we used to visit our Tapri daily after bunking the lectures, we used to talk non stop at this place. I tried to recollect few of the topics of discussions we had but all those were just CRAP for me now. But hey, back then they were more important for us then USA killing Osama.

College to Office - A Complex Journey

“College to Office” These are just 3 words to hear but in reality they are like 3 years to live and let me tell you that these 3 years are like a lifetime.

“There is a universal Truth we all have to face, whether you want to or not, 'Everything Eventually Ends', As much as I've looked forward to this day, I have always disliked endings.
Last day of College "The final chapter of a great Book".
Parting ways with a close friend, but endings are inevitable, leaves fall, we close the book.
You say Goodbye. Today is one of those days for us. Today we say goodbye to everything that was familiar. Everything that was comfortable. We are moving on. But just because we are leaving and that hurts, there are some people who are so much a part of us, that they will be with us no matter what. They are our solid ground, our direction. And the small clear voice in our hearts that will be with us ......................................................Always”.

I recently completed my college and started with my Job. I was very much happy that I was able to secure a job before I even completed my college and that too getting placed when you are not from a well known college was an added bonus.

Last semester being complete internship I was thinking that this phase will prepare me to get into the company mood. It will help in our transition from student to a professional. I was hoping that this change from College to Office will be comfortable and gradual.

Then suddenly after around 1 week of getting into the office zone, I found myself complete stranded, stranded in my own thoughts. I wasn’t prepared for this. I always felt that the transitional phase was over during internship period, I had prepared myself for this change. But sadly I was totally wrong. During internship we weren’t going to college but we were very much a part of college. We were connected to this institute for our synopsis, project presentations, corrections and stuff. We didn’t attend the college but still enjoyed the college life.

1 week into my job I realized I was going through a vacuum. It was kinda different thing coz I really felt goalless. I only had the task assigned to me which was supposed to be completed. The tasks were monotonous and within one week lost their charm of the fact that I will be earning if I complete those tasks. I was really thinking what is this thing that I feel is lost. Then I realized that even during my internship, I always had something to look forward too. Once the synopsis was done, we had presentations, once the presentations were done then we had the Black book. We were constantly looking forward to something and hence didn’t realize that we still had college in our minds and thoughts.

But now only left is the eerie feeling of doing something just for the sake of money.

“College to Office” Just 3 words but so difficult to live.

I am very much thankful to my college (kitna bhi kharab ho fir bhi) for giving me those wonderful moments to cherish about.

My classmates and friends, with whom I became a part of a family. I will always try to be of any help to them. Love u All. Guys and really eating Tiffin is so boring now. :(

My joyous seniors, who were like elder siblings to me.

And my juniors for whom we weren’t seniors but friends. We are always best at Cricket :P

Really thanks for making my 3 years in Sterling worth cherishing the whole life.

UML Diagrams Airport Boarding

Unified Modelling Language Practicals. This Subject is called as UML in Mumbai University MCA Colleges. Below is the case study of it for the construction of different UML diagrams

CASE STUDY:- Passenger Check-In and Boarding

  • We differentiate between three options for check-in:
    • Normal check-in with luggage at a normal check-in counter
    • Expres scheck-in without luggage at a special check-in counter
    • Automated check-in without luggage at a machine
  • In addition to the passenger, who representstravelers, there is the check-in representative. The check-in representative isa person who is not the actual passenger, but an agent of the passenger. Thecheck-in representative has the task of performing the check-in with the ticketof the passenger.
  • The check-in procedure includes submitting theticket, baggage check-in, seat reservation, and issuing and handing over theboarding pass.
  • Passengers who only have hand luggage can useexpress check-in. No baggage check-in is performed.
  • During boarding, the boarding pass of thepassenger is verified at the gate.
  • Automated check-in is conducted without the helpof a check-in clerk, directly at a machine (screen). Baggage cannot bechecked in.
  • The passenger can choose between a normalcheck-in, automated check-in, and express check-in. The passenger walks to thegate and presents his or her boarding pass. The check-in representative canperform a regular check-in, but is not able to perform express check-in andautomated check-in.
  • If we take a closer look, we notice that apassenger often travels with luggage, which he or she checks in. Baggagetransportation is responsible for loading luggage into the airplane. Baggagetransportation is carried out by an independent organization, known as ahandling agent. Consequently, it is considered an actor, more specifically, anoutside service provider. It does not matter for our diagram that individualemployees of the partner enterprise perform these tasks.
  • Ten minutes before a flight leaves, baggagetransportation requests a passenger list from passenger services, whichincludes every passenger who checked in, but did not board the airplane. On thebasis of this list all affected luggage will be unloaded again from theairplane. If the flight is an international flight, the customs authorities ofthe country in which the destination airport is located also request apassenger list.
